It started with a last sigaret. “And now it’s enough!” said Jan Kouwenhoven during his honeymoon with Anne de Rooij in Malawi. After several attemtps to quit smoking he now really thought it was time to quitBut why? He could think of numberous reasons, but none of them convincing enough to actually make him quit. None that is, until Anne and Jan met Charles during their honeymoon. Charles had a touching story. He had a dream of becoming a docter so he could better provide for his family and himself. Unfortunately, he didn’t have the means to pay for such a study. A study like that was way beyond his means.
Charles story had a big effect on Anne and Jan. Later that evening they talked about the possibilities of fulfilling this boy’s dream. At that moment Jan found his reason to quit smoking. A bit of calculating showed him that quitting smoking would save him about EUR 1200,- a year. “That’s it!”, Jan cried out. And so Charles became the first student sponsored by J’Africa. And as you can read , many have followed since then.
